Man shot dead confronting intruder at home in Melbourne's west
A man has been shot dead while confronting an intruder at his home in Melbourne's western suburbs.
Several family members, including the 43-year-old victim's baby, were home when the gunman forced his way into the property in Allison Street in Sunshine West just after 5:00am.
Police said there were signs of forced entry at the back of the house.
Armed Crime Squad Detective Inspector Stephen Clark said police were investigating if drugs were being dealt from the house.
"That's one avenue we are looking at... [But] I'm not going to explain that," he said.
Inspector Clark said police had previously spoken to the victim, but said he did not have a criminal history.
"We've done check-in on the address prior to attending and it's what we call a field contact," he said.
"In effect he's been spoken to by the police at some stage."
Officers arrived at the scene with sniffer dogs to track the shooter.
A neighbour working outside heard screaming and gunshots.
Locals said the neighbourhood was a typically quiet area and nothing like this had happened before.
"It's really heartbreaking, I feel very sorry for the families," one neighbour said.
"We've never had problems, we've grown up in the community, gone to the local church, gone to the local school, never had an issue so it's really sad to wake up to this in the morning."
