n a classic tale of technology being exploited for nefarious purposes, the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has charged a Chinese national with laundering a staggering $100 million. The funds, allegedly pilfered from victims of a sophisticated global investment scam, were funneled through a labyrinth of dummy accounts and fake businesses, part of a broader, Australian-based crime syndicate. The man, a resident of Melbourne, is the seventh individual to be charged under Operation Wickham. His arrest comes after the AFP executed search warrants at his residences in Sydney and Melbourne. He faces a list of charges centered around money laundering, offenses bearing maximum penalties of up to 15 and 2 years' imprisonment, respectively.
Operation Wickham was initiated following an alert issued by the United States Secret Service (USSS). The USSS had detected the transfer of millions of dollars from the US into an Australian business bank account, raising suspicion. The subsequent investigation uncovered a chilling truth: over $160 million had been siphoned from victims worldwide, with the majority of victims hailing from the US.
