‘Why should we be surprised?’: Penny Wong ‘voted with’ China and Russia at UN

Former speaker of the house Bronwyn Bishop has slammed Foreign Minister Penny Wong for voting against the United States and with China and Russia at the United Nations.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has accused Israel of not abiding with international law.

“Why should we be surprised at her words? After all, in the vote at the United Nations … she voted against our ally, the United States, and voted with China and Russia,” Ms Bishop told Sky News host James Macpherson.

“Why would we be surprised if she has them on her mind?”

“Not only was her speech clumsy and ill-advised, it was also self-centered,” Ms Panahi said.

“Don't get me wrong, Senator Wong, we're all for you confronting colonialism. It's happening in our corner of the world, in Cambodia, in the South China Sea, Taiwan and the Solomon Islands.

James Cleverly rejects call to confront UK's colonial past after speech by 'woke' Australia minister
]
Story by Greg Heffer, Political Correspondent For Mailonline Foreign Secretary.

He highlighted his own heritage, as well as that of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Home Secretary Suella Braverman, as evidence the UK had successfully moved beyond its imperial history.

The Foreign Secretary made the remarks after his Australian counterpart Penny Wong used a speech in London this week to call on Britain to reflect on its 'uncomfortable' past.

Ms Wong has been criticised back in Australia for engaging what has been dubbed 'woke diplomacy' while in Britain.

But, appearing alongside the Australian foreign minister at a joint press conference in Portsmouth this afternoon, Mr Cleverly insisted there had been 'no awkwardness' during their talks.

'There's been no tension, no awkwardness, there's been perhaps more than a little bit of humour about how often our history is portrayed both here in Portsmouth and in London,' the Foreign Secretary said.

He revealed the pair did discuss 'the nature of the relationship between the UK and other countries which are now in the Commonwealth but which were previously British colonies'.

But Mr Cleverly said these were 'not the mainstay of the conversations we've been having'./-

United Kingdom hits back at Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Story by Ellen Ransley For Nca Newswire • 3h ago

The United Kingdom has hit back at Penny Wong's suggestion Britain needs to do more to confront its colonial past, saying history cannot be eradicated or erased.

Earlier this week, Senator Wong gave a speech to Kings College, where she spoke about her own family's history of British colonialism, and said that only by acknowledging the past could the UK truly seek to modernise its relationships, particularly with Indo-Pacific countries.

'Such stories can sometimes feel uncomfortable – for those whose stories they are, and for those who hear them. But understanding the past enables us to better share the present and the future,' she said.

The UK's Foreign Minister James Cleverly rejected suggestions, saying the former colonial power was conscious of it in its dealings.

Following ministerial meetings in Portsmouth on Thursday (UK time), Mr Cleverly said the pair had discussed 'the nature of the relationship between the UK and other countries which are now in the Commonwealth but which were previously British colonies'.

'(But) these were not the mainstay of the conversations we've been having,' he said.

When probed further, he pushed back: 'You're asking the black foreign secretary?'

'The bottom line is we have a Prime Minister of Asian heritage, a home secretary of Asian heritage, a foreign secretary of African heritage,' he said.
