ICE erupts after New York releases 7,000 criminal migrants without warning - including rapists and killers - and demands state surrender thousands more still behind bars

Published: 12:12 AEDT, 2 December 2025 New York has released almost 7,000 criminal illegal migrants back onto the streets since Donald Trump returned to the White House, without notifying the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement office.

The Department of Homeland Security on Monday revealed to the New York Post that these dangerous offenders - including rapists and killers - were granted bail, parole or simply released back into the community with no warning to the agency.

Now, federal authorities are demanding New York Attorney General Letitia James - who was recently indicted by the Trump administration but had the case tossed out - guarantee that a further 7,113 who remain in custody will be handed over at the end of their sentences.

It comes as New Yorkers demonstrate against the arrival of ICE agents across the state, with protests turning violent on Saturday during a raid in Downtown Manhattan. 

In a letter sent to her office by DHS, James was warned 'these are people who are not only in the country illegally, but who have committed additional crimes, including heinous crimes like murder, rape, possession of child pornography, armed robbery, and many others.'

The demand letter was signed by acting ICE Director Todd Lyons. 

It stated there are 6,947 illegal aliens with active ICE detainers who have been released from custody since January 20, when Trump returned to the White House.

'Virtually all Americans agree that people like this should be swiftly removed from the United States when they leave New York's custody and not be returned to our streets to wreak havoc on law abiding citizens,' Lyons wrote.

Hundreds apprehended in ICE raid at Hyundai plant

Hundreds of federal officers descended on a small southeast Georgia community and raided the Hyundai Metaplant – arresting 475 people in the largest sweep yet in the current Trump administration’s immigration crackdown at US worksites.

Previously, federal officials estimated 450 people were apprehended Thursday at the enormous site in Ellabell, about 25 miles west of Savannah, Georgia.

The majority are Korean nationals, said Steven Schrank, a Homeland Security Investigations special agent in charge. Schrank said he did not have a breakdown of the arrestees’ nationalities.

All 475 people taken into custody were suspected of living and working illegally in the US, Schrank said. Some crossed into the US illegally; some had visa waivers and were prohibited from working; and some had overstayed their visas, he said.

During the raid, several people tried to flee – including some who “ran into a sewage pond located on the premises,” the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia said.

“Agents used a boat to fish them out of the water. One of the individuals swam under the boat and tried to flip it over to no avail. These people were captured and identified as illegal workers.”

Schrank noted that some of the workers may have been contractors or subcontractors.
