Donald Trump humiliated Vice President J.D. Vance, pitting him against Marco Rubio in a 2028 flash poll.MEGA

Donald Trump embarrassed his second-in-command as he polled his audience in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, May 11, asking whether they preferred Vice President J.D. Vance or Secretary of State Marco Rubio for president in 2028.Despite Vance being the expected frontrunner for the Republican nomination, his historic unpopularity has allowed Rubio, who was not present at the event, to gain ground in the polls, with some pundits predicting that the former Florida senator is angling for the position.

Trump asked the crowd, "Who likes J.D. Vance?" followed by "Who likes Marco Rubio?" Although Vance received solid applause, Trump described Rubio's reception as "very nice" and floated them as a potential "dream team," effectively suggesting his own Vice President might have to share or concede the top of a future ticket.Donald Trump polled the audience at a May 11 event. OK Magazine (AU)" Trump, who has jabbed at his veep before
, explicitly stated, "That does not mean you have my endorsement under any circumstance," leaving Vance’s future political standing uncertain.

Popular anti-Trump X account Call to Activism posted, “EMBARASSING!! Trump just humiliated J.D. Vance by polling the audience about whether they like him or Marco Rubio better for president in 2028. Then, he insisted he DOESN’T have his endorsement ‘under any circumstance.’ If I were J.D. Vance, I’d be MORTIFIED right now.”"Donald Trump called the VP a 'little boy.' MEGA" Donald Trump called the VP a 'little boy.'

MEGA© OK Magazine (AU) This isn't the first time the POTUS poked at Vance. In a bizarre jab while discussing the security response to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting, Trump joked that the Secret Service had lifted Vance "like he was a little boy.”Trump jokingly questioned why they hadn't lifted him just as fast, remarking that seeing Vance "ripped out of the chair" was "a view of the week.”©

OK Magazine (AU)Vance is facing historically low approval ratings, with net ratings dropping to -18 points, a significant decline from a +3 percent rating earlier in his term.CNN reported that Vance has experienced a 21-point drop in net approval, making him the most unpopular vice president at this stage in their term, with net ratings dropping from positive to -18 points."Rubio is experiencing a significant surge in popularity.MEGA" Rubio is experiencing a significant surge in popularity.MEGARubio is experiencing a significant surge in popularity and "Marcomentum" as Secretary of State, among other cabinet jobs he holds, emerging as a top contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.

Rubio has gained momentum in prediction markets—briefly leading for the 2028 nomination in early May — and is increasingly viewed as a favorable, "presidential" alternative to Vance among some Trump supporters. The most recent move of sending the Secretary of State to the Vatican for a one-on-one meeting with Pope Leo XIV to smoothe things over in the wake of recent Trump attacks on the Pontiff, while Vice President Vance was not included, was interpreted in political circles as a diplomatic snub by the president.

Rubio and Vance are said to be "hidden rivals" who can't stand each other, making for an interesting run in 2028./-

"A composite image of Andrew Forrest (left) and Michael Woodley situated at a Fortescue mine in WA. (AAP/ABC News)"

A composite image of Andrew Forrest (left) and Michael Woodley situated at a Fortescue mine in WA. (AAP/ABC News)Traditional owners from Western Australia's remote north have been awarded $150.1 million in compensation after mining magnate Andrew Forrest's company dug up hundreds of millions of tonnes of iron ore from their lands without their permission.

It is the biggest native title payout ever awarded in Australia and the culmination of an almost two-decades-long legal battle between the Yindjibarndi people and Mr Forrest's Fortescue mining company.

But elders have expressed their disappointment with the decision, with one describing the payout as "peanuts" compared to the billions that Fortescue has made from its lucrative Solomon Hub mines built on Yindjibarndi land.

The four huge open-pit mines were built without the agreement of the traditional owners and have generated tens of billions of dollars in revenue for the company since production began in 2013, with billions more expected before the mine is set to close in the mid-2040s.

The Yindjibarndi group had sought $1.8 billion for the loss of their cultural connection to the land, economic loss and the destruction of cultural sites.

But Fortescue argued $8.1 million would suffice.

In front of a courtroom packed with Yindjibarndi people and their supporters, Federal Court Justice Stephen Burley said the Yindjibarndi had a "deep and visceral connection" to their land that affected all aspects of their lives.

Justice Burley found Fortescue liable for both cultural loss, valued at $150 million, and $150,000 for economic loss.

Payout 'peanuts'

The amount is almost three times greater than the previous biggest court-mandated compensation payout to native title owners, awarded to the Gudanji, Yanyuwa, and Yanyuwa-Marra peoples in February, after Glencore's McArthur River mine was built on their country in the Northern Territory.

Michael Woodley, who has spearheaded the Yindjibarndi's fight for more than two decades as the YNAC's chief executive, sat in the front row of the tightly packed courtroom together with his wife Lorraine and four of their young granddaughters.

The mood in the court was sombre as Justice Burley read out his summary judgment, the quiet punctuated only by the occasional muffled cries and gurgles of Mr Woodley’s newest grandchild.

Outside the court, Yindjibarndi elders Judith Coppin and Wendy Hubert expressed their deep disappointment.

"Peanuts" was Ms Hubert's assessment, while Ms Coppin said many elders had died before the verdict was delivered, more than two decades after Fortescue first began clearing their land and the Yindjibarndi began their fight for recognition.

"Our family, half of our family is gone," she said.

"We've been fighting for 20 years, and we've only got a little bit of elders left now."

A vivid and colourful painting by Ms Coppin and a group of other Yindjibarndi artists adorned the wall of the court where Justice Burley read his summary, a gift from the artists following the 2017 native title determination.

No taxpayer bill

The state government had been expected to foot part of the compensation bill for granting Fortescue permission to mine the Yindjibarndi land but, unlike in the McArthur River case that awarded $54 million in damages against the NT government, WA taxpayers will not be asked to pick up the tab.

Only a summary of Justice Stephen Burley's decision was read out in the Perth courtroom — the full judgement is suppressed to protect commercially sensitive information.

The claim eventuated after the Yindjibarndi Ngurra Aboriginal Corporation (YNAC) was in 2017 recognised as the exclusive native title owners of a 2,700-kilometre tract of land in WA's mineral-rich Pilbara.

But by this time, Fortescue had already built its sprawling Solomon Hub operations on the land, after getting permission from both the government and a different local Aboriginal representative group it had backed

Justice Burley noted the 240 sacred sites inside the Solomon Hub mining area that had become inaccessible to the Yindjibarndi people, 124 of which had been "completely destroyed" by the mining operations.

He said moving evidence had been given to the court by a series of Yindjibarndi elders, who told of how their "spirit or will is destroyed when they see harm done to their country as a result of the mining".

'We'll fight it'

After the verdict, Mr Woodley said he was disappointed with the economic loss component of the compensation and hinted at a possible appeal.

"We don't get this far and stop. So we'll review it, we'll fight it. We've been fighting all our lives, right?" he said.

However, he said the awarding of $150 million was a "win for First Nations people" after the ongoing trauma of seeing mining on their land.

In a statement, a Fortescue spokesperson said Andrew Forrest cared "deeply about all First Nations people" and the company "accepts that the Yindjibarndi People are entitled to compensation".

The primary challenger currently threatening UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer's leadership is Catherine West

an Australian-born Member of Parliament (MP) for Hornsey and Wood Green in north London. [1, 2, 3, 4]

West threatened to trigger an immediate leadership contest following devastating local election results that saw a surge for Reform UK and significant losses for Labour. While West recently pulled back from launching an immediate challenge, she is pressuring Starmer to set a strict timetable for his departure by September. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Several other high-profile figures within the Labour Party have also been touted as potential leadership contenders if Starmer's position continues to weaken: [1, 2]
  • Angela Rayner: Starmer's former deputy prime minister.
  • Wes Streeting: The current Health Secretary.
  • Andy Burnham: The Mayor of Greater Manchester (though he currently lacks a seat in Westminster). [1, 2, 3]

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is among a small number of Cabinet Ministers calling for Sir Keir Starmer to go, sparking a major rift at the top of the government.

Four ministerial aides have resigned over Sir Keir Starmer's leadership and 71 Labour MPs have called for him to stand down.

Joe Morris quit his role as PPS to Health Secretary Wes Streeting - a potential leadership contender - saying the prime minister "no longer has the trust or confidence of the public".

As the numbers of resignations built up on Monday evening, the pressure on Sir Keir will become ever more intense.

Melanie Ward, aide to Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, has become the latest Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) to quit, following Naushabah Khan, PPS to Cabinet Office Minister Darren Jones, and Tom Rutland, PPS to Environment Secretary Emma Reynolds.

Meanwhile, Sally Jameson, PPS to Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, has joined calls for Sir Keir to set out a timetable for his departure.

There are 71 MPs who have now publicly urged Sir Keir either to resign immediately or set out a timetable to stand down.

In a speech earlier, the PM insisted he would prove the "doubters" wrong and would not be quitting.....

Donald Trump once boasted on social media that Chinese President Xi Jinping would offer him a "big, fat hug" ahead of his upcoming trip to China.

However, Beijing's extensive economic ties to Iran, alongside persistent trade tensions stemming from Mr Trump's first term, threaten to dampen any anticipated warmth when he arrives this week.

This comes despite Mr Trump's long-standing praise for Mr Xi, whom he views as a formidable leader deserving of his respect.

Known for his aversion to lengthy travel, Mr Trump is expected to spend only parts of three days on Chinese soil.

While some ceremonial grandeur is anticipated, the visit is unlikely to replicate the lavish "state visit-plus" reception Beijing afforded him in 2017.

Jonathan Czin, a former director for China at the National Security Council during the Biden administration, observed: "Even before this whole conflagration with Iran, they weren’t going to go state visit-plus like last time, just because things are tense".

That earlier trip saw China extend a full red-carpet welcome, complete with military music, flag-waving children, and chants of "Welcome".

Xi offered a tour of the Forbidden City. Trump and first lady Melania Trump even had a private dinner there. Trump was the first foreign leader since the People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949 to experience what was once reserved for emperors.

The following morning brought another welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People and featured a military parade. There also was a state banquet in Trump’s honor with video highlights from the Chinese leader’s previous visit to Florida and a clip of Trump’s granddaughter Arabella singing in Chinese.

Beijing does not offer this level of spectacle to most visiting foreign leaders. When British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the Forbidden City in January, Xi did not attend and the site remained open to the public. Starmer had to contend with tourists.

Ali Wyne, senior U.S.-China research and advocacy adviser for the Washington nonprofit the Crisis Group, said the “Chinese delegation will likely do its utmost to ensure that Trump leaves Beijing believing that he has just concluded the most extraordinary state visit of his two presidencies”.

But, he said, the “pomp and circumstance would serve a different role now than they did when he first visited Beijing” because “Xi has a much better understanding of Trump, and the administration’s own national security strategy and national defense strategy recognize China as a near-peer”.

After his visit to Beijing, Trump plans to host Xi at the White House (AP)

After his visit to Beijing, Trump plans to host Xi at the White House (AP)

Expectations for what gets accomplished could be lower this time, said Czin, now a fellow at the Brookings Institution.

He predicted that the Chinese may not offer major breakthroughs on trade or anything else because they are “working backward from our midterm elections” with the theory that the closer they get to Election Day “the more leverage they are going to have”.

The GOP is focused on retaining control of Congress, even as polling shows most Americans are unhappy with Trump’s economic policies and believe that the United States went too far in Iran. Still, the White House argues that Trump's previous firm hand with Beijing on tariffs — which the Supreme Court subsequently struck down — means the U.S. will remain in a strong position.

“President Trump cares about results, not symbols" White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said. “But even still, the president has a great relationship with President Xi, and the upcoming summit in Beijing will be both symbolically and substantively significant”.

Trump could meet with China's leader four times in eight months.

After his visit to Beijing, Trump plans to host Xi at the White House. Trump might also attend the November Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Shenzhen, China. And Xi could come to the Group of 20 summit the following month at Trump’s resort in Doral, Florida.

Czin noted that Xi also is not very fond of travel, meaning not all of the planned encounters may happen. He said China's leader also does not “do personal connections" like the kind Trump relishes, noting Xi led a Chinese military purge in January that included replacing officials with long-standing personal ties to his family.

Wyne, though, said Xi also “appreciates that he is unlikely to deal with another U.S. president who admires him as greatly and embraces as narrow a view of strategic competition.”

That means Xi may "attempt to pocket as many economic and security concessions from Trump as possible,” Wyne said.

“was actually a really good ... I don’t want to say ‘friend’. I don’t want to act foolish. ‘He was my friend’. But I got along with him great”.

Trump even suggested at the time that military force might not be required to ensure that Chinese troops do not encroach on Taiwan, simply because China’s leader "respects me” despite Trump more recently discussing potentially selling arms to Taiwan.

Trump has continued to praise the bilateral relationship since returning to the White House, even after his Beijing visit, originally scheduled for March, was postponed due to the early stages of the Iran war.

He unsuccessfully prodded China to get involved in reopening the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian forces choked it off and disrupted global economies. But China did use its leverage as the largest purchaser of Iranian oil to encourage Iran to agree to what has been a fragile ceasefire.

TRUMP-CHINA (AP)

TRUMP-CHINA (AP)

Beijing has strong economic ties to Tehran, and the war could hurt its economy, which was already projected to grow more slowly. If China can help establish lasting peace, though, that might boost its standing in negotiations on trade issues with the Trump administration.

During his 2017 visit, Trump announced $250 billion in nonbinding trade deals, some of which never materialized. A round of trade deals announced in 2020 and worth $200 billion mostly never came to fruition before Trump's first term ended.

More recently, Trump’s announcement last year of steep global tariffs prompted China to cut off purchases of U.S. soybeans and clamp down on exports of rare earth minerals needed by American factories.

Tensions have eased somewhat since the U.S. reached a trade truce last fall that has limited tariffs on both sides. The administration has continued to make reducing the U.S. trade deficit with China a priority, insisting it can do so while still working to encourage trade between the two countries.

“I expect great stability in the relationship," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said. "But that doesn’t mean our trade deficit can’t continue dropping”.

Kelly, the White House spokeswoman, said Trump “doesn’t travel anywhere without bringing deliverables home to our country".

"Americans can expect the president to deliver more good deals for the United States while in China” she said.

The shock result in the Farrer by-election has unsettled conservative ranks in regional NSW, fuelling wider questions about party stability and voter alignment.

The impact of the result, which delivered a historic win to One Nation through David Farley, has quickly spread beyond the electorate, with Queensland MP Colin Boyce keeping open the possibility of a move away from the Nationals.

Mr Boyce told The Guardian the result could not be ignored, pointing to One Nation’s strong performance as a sign of shifting voter sentiment in conservative heartland seats.

“The reality of what has happened last night has to be put into perspective: so approximately 40 per cent primary vote in the Farrer by-election (was) for One Nation, so the big question is, what does that look like in central Queensland?” Mr Boyce said.

“I would argue if you’re Pauline Hanson, it’s a lot easier to campaign in Rockhampton than it is in Albury.”

When asked directly about potentially moving to One Nation, Mr Boyce kept the door open, stating he considers “a lot of things”.

“At this point in time, I’m a member of the National Party, that’s Sunday morning, whatever the date is today.”

But he went further when reflecting on the broader implications for conservative politics, describing the result as a turning point.

“I think everybody should be thinking about their political future, particularly the people who are the organisers in the hierarchy. If this isn’t a wake-up call for conservative politics, what is?” he said.

“I’m only facing the reality of what I’ve been trying to point out for a very long time.”

Mr Boyce also pointed to historical voting patterns in Central Queensland, arguing support for One Nation had long been underestimated.

“The point is, Central Queensland is quite happy to vote One Nation,” he said.

The remarks followed One Nation’s breakthrough win in Farrer, which ended decades of Coalition control and delivered the party its first lower house seat since 1997.

Party leader Pauline Hanson used the result to attack the major parties in an interview on Sky News, stating voters had turned away from what she called political arrogance. “It’s the sheer arrogance, like we don’t have any right to be on the political scene. What the hell? Isn’t this a democracy? Don’t you put your policies forward and what you want to do for the people?” Ms Hanson said.

“Or are we a third-world country; we have no right to go out there and express what we want to do for the country? This is why they (the mainstream parties) will lose.”

Mr Boyce made his comments in Albury alongside One Nation figures, including Barnaby Joyce, who dismissed suggestions he would encourage any party switch.

“It’s like being divorced – it’s completely and utterly your choice,” Mr Joyce said.

“The vast majority of our members were in previous political parties, the vast majority of people who voted for us voted for someone else at the last election, the idea that people corral to one form of view, I don’t know, people should really do a little bit of Maynard Keynes thinking,” Mr Joyce said.

The by-election was triggered after the departure of Sussan Ley, with Farrer held by the Coalition for 76 years before the result.

Angus Taylor conceded defeat, while Jim Chalmers called it a political disaster.

“Angus Taylor went big on division and lost really badly,” Mr Chalmers said.

“It would surprise me if the clock wasn’t already ticking on his leadership.”

“What it showed is the Coalition can’t beat One Nation, and so they’ll have to join them.”
