On January 4, the restaurant was slapped with the fine for failing to comply with food safety requirements.
“Officers served improvement notices requiring a remedy to the issues — and on a return visit in December 2016 it was found that whilst food handling had improved, the wooden plates were still being used,” the city council said.
The owner of the restaurant entered a guilty plea at Birmingham Magistrates’ Court and was fined $86,582 plus $1160 costs and $208 victim surcharge.
The council's head of environmental health said the restaurant's failure to comply with food standards "is completely unacceptable".
“The owners were given sound advice which they chose to ignore. I am pleased magistrates supported our efforts with a large fine and hope advice we give on improving businesses to protect health will not be ignored in future.”
Other health issues identified included a high-level reliance on disposable gloves instead of the washing of hands and sanitising chemicals not being used in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
