If You Are The One: The Tim Tam Slam

WHEN you take part in the world’s biggest and most brutal TV dating show, you pull out the big guns.

But as one Aussie man found there’s a much sweeter way to find love.
Melbourne Commerce student Ben McMahon not only spoke in fluent Mandarin but wowed the ladies with his impressive guitar skills and with a Tim Tam slam or two.
For anyone who has been living under a rock and doesn’t know what it is, just watch the video.
But it seems he didn’t need to go to the effort as he had already caught the eye of Sydney lawyer Feng Guo.

Mr McMahon, who woke from a coma speaking the language following a serious car accident in 2012, took part in a If You Are The One Australian dating special which airs on SBS2 on Sunday.
But forget about everything you see on shows like The Bachelor because this real-life show, which has 50 million viewers, isn’t all champagne and roses.
These ladies don’t hold back as eligible men come on stage to be judged by not one, but by 24 women.
Not only do the girls have all the power, but they all have a blue light which switches to red the second they’re not interested.

As if being on stage in front of millions wasn’t scary enough, contestants are then offered blunt dating advice from popular host and ringmaster extraordinaire Meng Fei.
Potential contestants must also be willing to bare it all, from breakup histories and dating criteria, to their potential partner’s income expectations and favourite body part.
For both young Australians, going on the show, which was filmed in China, was quite the experience.

Mr McMahon said he thought he’d audition for the show for a bit of fun and figured it was a great opportunity to use his Mandarin.
He didn’t expect to be blown away by Ms Guo, who was equally impressed with him and by the fact he could speak Mandarin better than she could.
Mr McMahon, studied Mandarin at school but never really grasped it, so his parents were understandably surprised when he woke up from his coma and began speaking in the language, requiring a nurse to act as translator.

It took a while for his brain to remember English was his first language, but within weeks of recovering he had enrolled in a Mandarin course as part of his degree.
He said the course, which took him to China, fuelled his interest in the culture.
So when he saw auditions were taking place for the show, something he was a big fan of, he
figured he’d take a chance.
“I’m single so I thought why not,” he told news.com.au
“I wasn’t sure how I’d go being an undergraduate (most of the contestants have jobs) and unlike The Bachelor who gets to go on lots of dates I had just 45 minutes to impress.
“But I didn’t expect to find someone I hit it off with so well so quickly.”
As part of the wooing process, he had to show the ladies what he was capable of, and while most of the Aussie contestants were familiar with the iconic biscuit, the Tim Tam
slam did impress the other ladies and the audience, especially when he substituted milk for green tea.
The pair later walked off stage together with Mr McMahon admitting he was wowed by the beautiful corporate lawyer.

For Ms Guo, it was what happened after the show that impressed her even more with her fellow contestant wowing her family with his knowledge of Shanghainese as well.
The 26-year-old, who immigrated to Australia as a toddler, said she only decided to audition after a day on the beach with her mates.
She submitted her tape, after asking her mother’s help in what to say in Mandarin, and didn’t expect to hear back.
When she got accepted she too figured it was just a bit of fun.
But when Mr McMahon walked on stage she was gobsmacked.
“I picked him in three seconds,” she said.
“I pressed the buzzer because he looked good and I wanted to know more about this guy.
“I didn’t go on the show looking for a husband, I just wanted to be part of the experience so embraced it. But finding Ben was definitely a huge bonus.”

Ms Guo said the reason the show was so brutal, and different from reality TV in Australia is because the contestants in China “don’t date to have fun” rather “the guys date to find a
wife and the girls to find a husband.”
The pair have kept in touch since the show was filmed 10 weeks ago and will spend the next two weeks together, including being sent on a trip to the Maldives, a prize from
the show.
“We will see how it all goes,” Ms Guo said.
“We’re effectively going on a honeymoon on our second date, who knows if it will work out in reality but you have to give it a go.”
The pair were part of a group of 26 Australians who travelled to Nanjing, in China, along with a team from SBS who filmed an eye-opening look at what takes place behind the cult show.

The Feed and SBS Producer Elise Potaka told news.com.au the experience was eye-opening and even she didn’t expect Ms Guo and Mr McMahon to hit it off so quickly.
She said instead of champagne contestants had rice wine before going on stage, with many women going all out to dress to impress including using double eyelid tape, considered by many in Asia to be a beautiful feature.
“It’s a well oiled machined, the girls are upfront and being on stage in front of 50 million people is no easy feat,” she said.
“Nothing is set up, there are no actors, and the guys don’t see the girls until they are on stage, it’s spontaneous and that’s why it’s so good.”
Interestingly she said the show’s producer Chen Chen soil found it hard to say what made a good match, despite 300 couples going on to marry since the show hit TV screens.
The If You Are The One Australian specials air on SBS 2, 7:30pm Sunday 14 February and 7.30pm Sunday 21 February.

Kỳ lạ chàng trai Úc tỉnh dậy sau 1 tuần hôn mê, nói tiếng Trung như gió

   

Một chàng trai người Úc sau một tai nạn xe hơi đã rơi vào tình trạng hôn mê sâu. Sau 1 tuần tỉnh dậy, tự nhiên anh nói được tiếng Trung thành thạo như tiếng mẹ đẻ. Từ đó cuộc sống của anh như được sinh ra lần thứ hai nên thay đổi hoàn toàn, hạnh phúc lớn nhất là anh đã tìm được nửa kia của mình ở nước bản địa.
McMahon, 25 tuổi đến từ Melbourne, nước Úc bị hôn mê sâu năm 2012 sau một vụ tai nạn xe hơi nghiêm trọng. Anh được chuyển tới bệnh viện và nằm ở đó một tuần. Sau khi tỉnh dậy, anh bỗng nhiên nói tiếng Trung như gió, đài ABC News đưa tin.



Lúc tỉnh dậy, anh hỏi y tá bằng tiếng Trung: “Tôi đau quá… Chuyện gì xảy vậy?”. Thậm chí, anh quên cả cách dùng tiếng Anh như thế nào cho đúng.

Mặc dù trước đó anh có học tiếng Trung ở trường cấp 3, tuy nhiên McMahon khẳng định trình độ của anh chỉ ở mức cơ bản. Bố mẹ anh cũng không phải là người Trung Quốc, vậy mà anh có thể nói lưu loát, viết thành thạo dù tiếng Trung là chữ tượng hình rất khó nhớ.
Trong hoạ có phúc, trong phúc có hoạ
Sau khi có được khả năng kỳ lạ này, McMahon đã tận dụng thời cơ “ngàn năm có một” và trở thành MC cho một chương trình truyền hình tiếng Trung. Ngoài ra, anh còn là một hướng dẫn viên du lịch ở quê nhà Melbourne. Mới đây, vận may lại mỉm cười với anh trong một chương trình thực tế ở Trung Quốc.

Quen thêm bạn bè người Trung Quốc
“Trong văn hóa Trung Quốc có câu ‘Sau cơn mưa trời lại sáng’”, McMahon nói dí dỏm. Khi tham gia show truyền hình “Nếu bạn là người đó” ở tỉnh Giang Tô, anh đã làm quen và kết duyên với một cô gái Trung Quốc xinh xắn mang tên Feng Guo cũng tham dự chương trình.
McMahon hào hứng nói: “Tôi nghĩ là mình đã tìm được một nửa thực sự rồi”.

Hôn mê có thể kéo dài từ nhiều ngày đến nhiều tuần, trong nhiều trường hợp nặng có thể kéo dài hơn 5 tuần, cũng có vài trường hợp kéo dài nhiều năm. Vài bệnh nhân dần dần tỉnh dậy, vài bệnh nhân tiến triển sang trạng thái sống thực vật, số khác thì chết.
Vài bệnh nhân sau khi trở thành sống thực vật lại lấy lại được sự nhận thức nhất định. Nhiều trường hợp sống thực vật nhiều năm hoặc nhiều thập kỷ, trường hợp kéo dài nhất được ghi nhận là 37 năm. Điều đáng chú ý là những người tỉnh dậy sau cơn hôn mê dài thường xuất hiện những hiện tượng lạ: thay đổi tính cách, giới tính, nói được ngôn ngữ khác…

Sau hôn mê sâu nhiều người có khả năng nói được ngoại ngữ
Trường hợp của McMahon không phải là duy nhất. Có rất nhiều trường hợp sau khi hôn mê thì có khả năng nói được ngôn ngữ khác, thậm chí là nhiều ngôn ngữ khác hoặc những ngôn ngữ cổ ít người dùng, có trường hợp thậm chí quên mất ngôn ngữ vốn có.
Ví dụ như Dujomir Marasovic ở Croatia, cô rơi vào tình trạng hôn mê sâu trong 24 giờ. Khi tỉnh dậy từ trận hôn mê, cô đột nhiên nói thông thạo tiếng Đức khiến ngay cả bản thân cô cũng không hiểu vì sao. Hiện nay, trong giao tiếp hàng ngày với cha mẹ và người thân, cô gái này phải nhờ đến một người phiên dịch.
Hiện tượng này có liên quan đến bộ phận ghi nhớ ngôn ngữ trong bộ não. Còn các nhà tâm thần học đưa ra gỉa thuyết rằng nó liên quan đến tiền kiếp. Bạn có thể đã từng sống ở địa phương đó trong các kiếp trước, và khi có chấn động các ký ức lãng quên liền được đánh thức. Điều đó lý giải vì sao bạn có thể thấy cảnh tượng nơi nào đó rất thân quen dù lần đầu ghé thăm, hoặc gặp người lạ mà cảm giác như đã quen lâu lắm rồi.
