Australia, Vietnam strengthen strategic ties with new defence, border security agreements

Australia and Vietnam have agreed to deepen their comprehensive strategic partnership, expanding cooperation on defence, agriculture, border security and critical supply chains

Australia and Vietnam stepped up bilateral cooperation, signing agreements on defence, agriculture and border security during Vietnamese President To Lam's official visit to Sydney on Tuesday. The two countries also agreed to deepen coordination on critical minerals, semiconductors and clean energy as part of efforts to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Lam said they were concerned about restrictive trade practices that disrupt global supply chains, according to a joint statement issued during Lam's visit.

The Vietnam Coast Guard and the Australian Border Force signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen cooperation on maritime law enforcement, with the leaders present at the signing.

A separate agreement was signed to expand cooperation and mutual assistance between the two countries' border forces, according to a statement from the Vietnamese government.

Leaders call for peaceful dispute resolution

Lam said Australia and Vietnam needed closer dialogue and greater trust as global developments become increasingly complex.

"We agree that, amid rapid and complex developments around the world, countries need to strengthen dialogue, build trust, ensure security, safety and freedom of navigation and overflight, and settle disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law," Lam said during a joint media appearance with Albanese.
