outside of her electoral office has revealed that she was thanking the people who helped her, and talked about her grandchildren.

Haines, member for Indi in Victoria was critically injured

after being hit multiple times by a car allegedly driven by Ben Nugent, 43, outside her electoral office in Wangaratta on Monday.

Several bystanders rushed to help her, and two of them spoke to the Today Show, revealing what Haines said to those who were trying to help her.

“She was thanking us, it was incredible,” Jacklyn Black said.

“We were having conversations, she was talking about her grandkids, I was just keeping her talking to us.”

Cody Lepoivedin, who was working across the street when he heard the initial crash, said Haines was “very distraught” but remained composed.

“She was very thankful to the aid that the community had given her,” he told Today

“She just thanked everyone, said they were ‘lovely people.’”

Haines’ first words to bystanders were “Thank you, you lovely people,” reported The herald-Sun.

While some bystanders looked to apprehend the alleged offender, others, like Jacob Evans - Jacklyn’s partner - looked to treat Haines’ serious leg injuries.

“I was lucky enough to have a tourniquet in my bag, I threw the tourniquet on the leg that was most damaged,” Evans told Today.

“We took anything from our surroundings that we could to help us.”

Haines was airlifted to hospital in Melbourne on Monday night, where she underwent surgery.

Unfortunately, it has been confirmed she has lost one of her legs.

A statement from The Alfred Hospital, where Haines is currently being treated, confirmed she was still in a critical condition on Wednesday morning. Her family is currently by her bedside.

Haines has three children with her husband, Phil, who she lives with on a cattle farm in her electorate in north-eastern Victoria. It is not known exactly how many grandchildren she has.

Nugent has been charged with several offences in relation to the alleged attack on Haines, including dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally cause serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official.

He will face Wangaratta Magistrates Court today.

From Friends to Opponents: Brendan Nugent and Helen HHaines.

Brendan Nugent’s family has confirmed that Helen Haines has been their friend for more than 20 years, describing her as “a deeply respected, valued and much-loved member of our local community” Nugent’s father Rod Nugent and his partner Christine Cunningham, a health executive who has worked with Haines, said the attack on Haines was “devastating and unfathomable” and that they would assist police in any way they could Financial ReviewOn 20 October 2026, Nugent was arrested and charged with

dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and the Commonwealth offence of causing harm to a Commonwealth public official after allegedly striking Haines with a Toyota LandCruiser outside her Wangaratta electorate officeHaines remains in critical condition, having lost one leg and surgeons fighting to save the otherPolice allege the attack was targeted, and a good Samaritan intervened to stop the driver Why the relationship turned adversarial

According to multiple reports, Nugent’s trajectory shifted from a long-time environmental campaigner and forestry researcher — who once admired Haines’ climate change stance

— to someone engaged in conspiracy theories about figures like Jeffrey Epstein, the Israel–Gaza conflict, and the Ukraine–Russia.

. Neighbours and local police had raised concerns about his behaviour in the months before the attack, including erratic conduct, loud music, and alleged threat.

The Australian Financial Review and The Guardian note that Nugent’s social media posts and online activity reflected a gradual ideological and personal drift away from shared values with Haines, aligning instead with fringe political narratives

. This, combined with documented community concerns about his mental health and behaviour, is seen as the context in which the long-standing friendship ended and the adversarial situation began.

Summary

  • Friendship: Nugent’s family and Haines’ associates confirm over 20 years of friendship
  • Turning point: Reports indicate a shift in Nugent’s political views and online activity toward conspiracy theories, alongside community concerns about his behaviour

  • Conflict: The attack on Haines, for which Nugent has been charged, marks the culmination of this breakdown, transforming a long-term personal relationship into a legal and public adversarial one

.In short, the “more than 20 years” of friendship was ended by a combination of changing political alignment, community concerns, and the violent act itself, which turned former friends into opponents in both the public and legal spheres.
