Avani Dias: Australian journalist and radio presenter
Avani Dias is an Australian journalist and radio
presenter whose career has taken her from community radio and student
journalism to some of the most important newsrooms in Australia and South Asia.
Born on 15 November 1991 in Wattle Grove, New South Wales, she grew up in the
south western suburbs of Sydney. As the elder of two siblings, she developed an
early interest in storytelling and journalism, a passion that would eventually
lead her to international reporting.
Dias attended Bankstown Grammar School and later studied
at the University of Sydney. While at university, she became involved with the
student newspaper Honi Soit and in 2013 was elected as one of its editors. This
experience gave her an early opportunity to explore journalism, investigate
stories, and understand the responsibilities that come with reporting for an
audience.
Her professional journey began at FBi Radio, an
independent radio station that she has credited with giving her a start in
media. She later worked as a production assistant at the Australian
Broadcasting Corporation before receiving an ABC News cadetship in 2015. From
there, her career developed rapidly. She worked as a multiplatform and video
journalist in Sydney and Darwin and eventually became the anchor of the Darwin
7PM News bulletin.
Dias also expanded her experience beyond television.
Between 2015 and 2017, she wrote for The New Daily, while continuing to develop
her broadcasting career. Her ability to move between different forms of
journalism demonstrated her versatility and her willingness to take on new
challenges.
In December 2019, another major opportunity arrived when
Dias was announced as the new presenter of Hack on Triple J. She succeeded Tom
Tilley and hosted the youth focused current affairs program from 2020 until
December 2021. During her time on Hack, she became known for covering issues
affecting young Australians and for bringing current affairs into conversations
with a younger audience.
In 2021, Dias was selected for an international role that
would become one of the most significant chapters of her career. She relocated
to New Delhi to serve as the ABC’s foreign correspondent for South Asia.
Reporting from the region placed her at the centre of major political and
social developments and gave her the opportunity to tell stories for audiences
in Australia and beyond.
One of her most notable investigations came in 2024 with
the Foreign Correspondent report Sikhs, Spies and Murder, which examined
allegations surrounding the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada and
alleged links to India. The report generated significant attention. India
blocked the report on YouTube and Dias said pressure from the Indian government
made it increasingly difficult for her to work there. Her visa was extended for
two months following a request from the Australian government, but she ultimately
decided to return to Australia.
Dias later faced criticism over a June 2024 documentary
about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi after she incorrectly stated that the
word secular had been part of India’s Constitution since 1947. The ABC
subsequently issued a clarification acknowledging the error and explaining that
the word was formally added to the Preamble in 1976.
Throughout her career, Dias has received recognition for
her journalism. She won the Public Interest Award at the 2019 New South Wales
Premier’s Multicultural Communications Awards and the Young Journalist of the
Year award at the 2016 Northern Territory Press Club Awards. She has also
received several Walkley Award nominations.
Avani Dias’s journey is a story of ambition, courage, and
the demanding nature of modern journalism. From a student newspaper in Sydney
to radio, television, international correspondence, and investigative
reporting, she has built a career across many different sides of the media. Her
experiences show how journalism can take one person from a local newsroom to
the international stage, where important stories can attract both public
attention and intense scrutiny.
