The Assange background

Court documents for the Northern Mariana Islands show that US prosecutors filed criminal paperwork against Assange outlining a single criminal count of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US national defence documents.

Assange boarded a flight from Stansted Airport to Bangkok after being releases from Belmarsh prison. A connecting flight on a private jet carrying Assange and a team of lawyers touched down in Saipan at 6.16am AEST.

Assange was then processed by security at 7.40am AEST and is due to face court in the US territory at 9am where he will plead guilty to a single felony charge of conspiring to obtain and distribute classified information, before heading home to Australia.

In 2010 the WikiLeaks leader released hundreds of thousands of classified US military documents relating to the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, along with thousands of diplomatic cables.

The release was the largest security breach of its kind in US military history. The hearing is scheduled to take place tomorrow with Assange due to be sentenced to 62 months’ already served, some in Belmarsh Prison in the UK. He has already left the UK, via London’s Stansted Airport. Assange’s destination has not yet been disclosed.
