An Independent MP has thrown her support behind a former prime minister facing backlash over his controversial comments about the AUKUS submarine deal.Ex-Labor leader Paul Keating launched a tirade against the Albanese government at the National Press Club on Wednesday after the announcement Australia would secure eight nuclear powered submarines from the early 2030s amid tensions in the Indo Pacific. The 79-year-old, a fierce critic of the trilateral partnership, described the pact with the United Kingdom and United States as the worst international decision by an Australian Labor government since Billy Hughes' bid to introduce conscription in World War I."Look, I'd say for the cost, $360 billion, we're going to get eight submarines. It must be the worst deal in all history," Mr Keating said."If we were buying Collins class replacements, we'd get at least 40 to 50 of those submarines... for the same price."

Dai Le, the Independent MP for Fowler in Sydney, said she "wholeheartedly" agreed the $368 billion price tag was too much and could instead be spent to address issues in the country.

"This is costing us not just in financial but it's costing us in relationship as well," she told the Today show on Thursday morning.

"So I just don't get that at this point in time of the cost of living crisis, as we've just spoke about the electricity prices, and families are struggling, we are spending $368 billion.

"I just don't get it."

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) revealed on Wednesday its draft default market offer decision for the upcoming 2023/2024 financial year, which showed a grim outlook for families in three states already struggling with cost of living pressures.

It predicted the price for residential electricity would increase between 19.5 per cent to 23.7 per cent, depending on which state a family is in and the energy provider, while business owners can expect rises from 14.7 per cent to 25.4 per cent.
