Six Melbourne LJ Hooker offices close over missing money claims
A REAL estate agent has blamed a close family member for losing millions of dollars owed to homeowners, renters and landlords.
LJ Hooker franchisee Judy Thanh Truc told the Sunday Herald Sun she had not stolen any money and claimed she had been “set up”.
But she has accepted responsibility for the crisis that has seen authorities shut down her six Melbourne offices.
In a series of text messages, Ms Truc said the family member — her franchise “director of business management” — looked after her trust accounts.
She said the family member claimed the accounts were hacked but she later cut off contact with the family member when she realised they had “moved the monies”.
About 110 clients of Ms Truc’s Glen Waverley, Keysborough, Box Hill, Mount Waverley, Doncaster and Burwood franchises are now out of pocket. About 20 have lost home deposits and the others are owed rental money and bonds. Some have lost as much as $60,000.

Consumer Affairs Minister Jane Garrett said victims would get their money back through the Victorian Property Fund, which is worth more than $400 million.
“We take an absolute zero tolerance approach to this. This is other people’s money,” Ms Garrett said. “To abuse that trust, you’ll feel the full force of the law.”
Ms Truc, also known as Judy Nguyen, said she was assisting authorities.
“I am fully responsible for all this because company is under my name,” she said.
“I just want to telling the true ... I never stolen anyone monies !! (sic)”
The franchisee said she thought less than $2 million was missing. She tried to explain to her clients what went wrong but she said they didn’t believe her.
Ms Truc said the family member had been worried a hacker had taken money from the trust accounts so “moved the monies” but did not tell her until later.
The family member did not return calls from the Sunday Herald Sun.
LJ Hooker’s head office continued to distance itself from the franchisee and said: “Ms Nguyen is the registered licensee in charge of the operation of the real estate offices.”
Consumer Affairs Victoria said it was contacted by an auditor who was reviewing the real estate agent’s books on April 20, which prompted an investigation.
The six officers were closed on April 21 and an administrator appointed.
