The family of a man sentenced to death in China on drug charges have broken their silence to call for an end to speculation around his situation.
Karm Gilespie, who is believed to be in his early 50s, has been detained in China since 2013, when he was allegedly found with several kilograms of methamphetamine in the city of Guangzhou.
However, his case only entered the public spotlight over the weekend, when it was confirmed he had been sentenced to death on drug charges last week.
In a statement issued through the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Mr Gilespie's family said they wanted speculation around the case to end.
"Our family is very saddened by the situation. We will not be making any public comment and ask that the media respects our privacy at this difficult time," the statement said.
