The shock result in the Farrer by-election has unsettled
conservative ranks in regional NSW, fuelling wider questions about party
stability and voter alignment.
The impact of the result, which delivered a historic win to
One Nation through David Farley, has quickly spread beyond the electorate, with
Queensland MP Colin Boyce keeping open the possibility of a move away from the
Nationals.
Mr Boyce told The Guardian the result could not be ignored,
pointing to One Nation’s strong performance as a sign of shifting voter
sentiment in conservative heartland seats.
“The reality of what has happened last night has to be put
into perspective: so approximately 40 per cent primary vote in the Farrer
by-election (was) for One Nation, so the big question is, what does that look
like in central Queensland?” Mr Boyce said.
MP floats One Nation switch
“I would argue if you’re Pauline Hanson, it’s a lot easier
to campaign in Rockhampton than it is in Albury.”
When asked directly about potentially moving to One Nation,
Mr Boyce kept the door open, stating he considers “a lot of things”.
“At this point in time, I’m a member of the National Party,
that’s Sunday morning, whatever the date is today.”
But he went further when reflecting on the broader
implications for conservative politics, describing the result as a turning
point.
“I think everybody should be thinking about their political
future, particularly the people who are the organisers in the hierarchy. If
this isn’t a wake-up call for conservative politics, what is?” he said.
“I’m only facing the reality of what I’ve been trying to
point out for a very long time.”
Mr Boyce also pointed to historical voting patterns in
Central Queensland, arguing support for One Nation had long been
underestimated.
“The point is, Central Queensland is quite happy to vote One
Nation,” he said.
MP floats One Nation switch
The remarks followed One Nation’s breakthrough win in
Farrer, which ended decades of Coalition control and delivered the party its
first lower house seat since 1997.
Party leader Pauline Hanson used the result to attack the
major parties in an interview on Sky News, stating voters had turned away from
what she called political arrogance. “It’s the sheer arrogance, like we don’t have any right to be on
the political scene. What the hell? Isn’t this a democracy? Don’t you put your
policies forward and what you want to do for the people?” Ms Hanson said.
“Or are we a third-world country; we have no right to go out
there and express what we want to do for the country? This is why they (the
mainstream parties) will lose.”
MP floats One Nation switch
Mr Boyce made his comments in Albury alongside One Nation
figures, including Barnaby Joyce, who dismissed suggestions he would encourage
any party switch.
“It’s like being divorced – it’s completely and utterly your
choice,” Mr Joyce said.
“The vast majority of our members were in previous political
parties, the vast majority of people who voted for us voted for someone else at
the last election, the idea that people corral to one form of view, I don’t
know, people should really do a little bit of Maynard Keynes thinking,” Mr
Joyce said.
The by-election was triggered after the departure of Sussan
Ley, with Farrer held by the Coalition for 76 years before the result.
Angus Taylor conceded defeat, while Jim Chalmers called it a
political disaster.
“Angus Taylor went big on division and lost really badly,”
Mr Chalmers said.
“It would surprise me if the clock wasn’t already ticking on
his leadership.”
“What it showed is the Coalition can’t beat One Nation, and
so they’ll have to join them.”
