Diane Giese: Mr Phan, let's begin with your childhood in North Vietnam. How much can you remember of those years? Dong Bich Phan: I think I can remember vividly because I had a very good time during that time. I was about four or five, I could remember that I followed my father on his fishing time. It's not far away that we went to, but we went to the West Lake all day which is a beautiful lake in Hanoi. And he would peddle on his bicycle carrying me behind him and we would reach the West lake and then we would hire a boat for us to go fishing. My father was not a good fishing man. He could not catch many fish but the time was enjoyable for me because he always bought me chocolates, lollies you know, to go along. Diane Giese: You were close to your father, were you? Dong Bich Phan: Yeah, I think that he's a person very close to me and I enjoyed the time spending with him. And then we would return back and he would ride his bicycle you know, carrying me you know, behind him again and then we would go for a ride you know, in the hilly part of Hanoi. My family moved from Hanoi to South Vietnam in 1954 and we became once again refugees in our own land. We were displaced people so to speak. We were political, you know, refugees. We had to re-establish ourselves once again. |
