Van driver dead after police standoff in hunt for California mass shooter, reports say
The driver of a white van linked to a mass shooting that killed at least 10 people and injured 10 more at a ballroom dance studio in California is dead, local media is reporting.
Five men and five woman were killed at the Monterey Park studio, their ages are unknown. An additional 10 injured victims were rushed to multiple local hospitals and their conditions ranged from critical to stable.
Sheriff Robert Luna said the suspect was believed to be an Asian male. A wanted notice issued early this morning (AEDT) by the sheriff's office showed a man of Asian appearance wearing a beanie and a coat.
The notice said the man should be considered armed and dangerous.
A SWAT team earlier this morning surrounded a white cargo van at nearby Torrance, Luna said at a press conference this morning.
After an hours-long stand-off, they moved in and began searching the van.
CNN reported that law enforcement officials had earlier said the sound of a gunshot had been heard inside the vehicle.
"We believe there is a person inside. We don't know their condition," Luna said.
"Could it be our suspect? Possibly."
The LA Times quoted law enforcement sources saying the driver had been found dead.
Police are not believed to have been responsible for his death.
The LA Sheriff's Department's Special Enforcement Bureau has since tweeted out that the stand-off has ended and the situation is "safe".
No other information, including whether the suspect was found or arrested, has officially been confirmed by authorities.
Luna said the suspect's name was currently being withheld.
"We believe if we're putting his name out, that will inhibit our ability to potentially arrest the suspect if he's out there," he said.
He said detectives were looking at the possibility of other people being involved.
"We think there's one (suspect), there may be more," he said.
Luna said there was no known motive, but asked media "who walks into a dance hall and guns down 20 people?"
Police were called to the Star Dance Studio at 10.22pm Saturday (local time) after a major Lunar New Year festival was held in the city of about 61,000 people, which is 16km east of Los Angeles.
Captain Andrew Meyer of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said first responders found people "pouring out of the location, screaming".
Investigators said multiple rounds were fired but they did not believe an assault weapon was used.
Luna said officers at this point did not believe it was a high-powered assault rifle, but did not go into further details.
Seung Won Choi, who owns the Clam House seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from where the shooting happened, told the Los Angeles Times that three people rushed into his business and told him to lock the door.
The people also told Choi that there was a shooter who had multiple rounds of ammunition on him so he could reload. Choi said he believes the shooting took place at a dance club.
Police are scouring CCTV for more information that might help identify the attacker. The FBI is also involved in the manhunt.
Luna said that at least one threat had been called in to a hospital where the wounded victims had been taken - though it's believed to be unconnected.
